Description

Earthenware porringer, cover, and stand, decorated with dark blue tin-glaze randomly splashed with white

Buff earthenware, thrown, with applied handles and knob, tin-glazed dark blue, except for the base of the bowl, and decorated with random white splashes on the visible surfaces; the interior of the bowl and cover, and the reverse of the stand are plain blue. The porringer has a disk base, a depressed globular body with a short neck, and two small rolled loop handles. The slightly domed cover (A) has a mushroom-shaped knob, and a flange on the underside which fits inside the neck of the porringer. The stand (B) is circular with shallow curved sides, and stands on a footring.

Note

Faïence with white splashed decoration is described in France as 'à la bougie', because it resembles splashes of wax from candles. It was used on tableware, vases, and pharmacy jars. The cover has a slightly different blue glaze from the bowl and stand, and is also a little loose, which suggests that it may originally have been with a different vessel.
