Note

Label text from the exhibition ‘Madonnas and Miracles: The Holy Home in Renaissance Italy’, on display at The Fitzwilliam Museum from 7 March until 4 June 2017: This colourful tile would have been hung on a wall. It shows Roch and Sebastian on either side of the Madonna and Child. People prayed to these saints to guard them from the terrible danger of plague. The owners of this work of art hoped that its presence in their home would offer them divine protection from the disease, which was normally fatal.
