Description

Vase. Hard-paste porcelain painted in iron-red, aubergine, yellow, blue, green and turquoise with five panels enclosing insects and flowering shrubs.

Vase. Hard-paste porcelain painted in a bright enamel palette of iron-red, aubergine, yellow, blue, green and turquoise. Each vase is of shouldered upright form slightly tapered towards the wide countersunk base. The sides are divided by vertical grooves into ten shallow lobes and decorated with five upright panels edged in double iron-red lines enclosing winged insects, hovering beside flowering tree peony, prunus, chrysanthemum and peony sprays. There is a border of flowering red sprays round the base and the shoulders have an iron-red trellis-diaper band reserved with the Emblems of the Four Accomplishments, literature, music, painting and weiqi (checkers). The wide neck has two peony sprays and a red zig-zag band round the interior of the rim.

Notes

History note: Numbers T.10 and T.11 in the Cunliffe Collection Catalogue, where they are said to have been purchased at Christies, 9.5.16.
