Vase. Hard-paste porcelain painted in a soft toned enamel palette of iron-red, blue, yellow, two greens turquoise, aubergine and black. The cylindrical body is painted with a continuous scene of a mandarin seated in a wheeled throne topped by a peacock feather canopy surrounded by various attendants, two carrying standards and two waving large fans, being received by three officials bearing aloft ivory wands; a group of female musicians are playing in the background within an elaborate open pavilion; the scene takes place on a garden terrace with maple and pine trees growing from stacked rockwork to one side. The shoulders are roughly painted with a brocade-diaper border reserved with four chrysanthemum scrollwork vignettes and the upright neck with lilies and peonies growing from behind pierced rockwork beneath an iron-red key-fret border round the galleried rim.
