Dense buff stoneware two handled tripod censer. Thick clair de lune glaze crackled and six splashes of purple. Two marks with rings and eight smaller ornaments in relief on the body. Three dragons, a rose, and two small ornaments in relief on the neck and handles. Black wood stand and cover with jade knob. Song or Yüan ware of Chun type. Chinese.
History note: Provenance: Yamanaka bought this in Shanghai in 1907 (Winter) for £265. It came from Han-kow and may have been stolen from Tuan-fang, the Viceroy. Yamanaka sold it to Larkin for £350. Raphael bought it after the Larkin sale at Christie’s 16th July 1918. Lot 270 when it fetched 210 guineas. Chinese Exhibition Orangerie Paris 1937.
