Light greyish-buff earthenware. Moulded with the design in relief, and tin-glazed overall; unevenly and thinly on the reverse. Painted in blue, yellow, and brownish-orange. Shape 76. Circular with curved sides, standing on a low footring, pierced by a hole incorrectly placed for suspension the right way up.

Label text from the exhibition ‘Madonnas and Miracles: The Holy Home in Renaissance Italy’, on display at The Fitzwilliam Museum from 7 March until 4 June 2017: St Jerome kneels beside his faithful companion, the lion, here only the size of a small dog. They inhabit a wilderness adorned with flowers. To inspire devotion in the user of the bowl, Jerome (moulded in relief) meditates on a huge crucifix in his left hand, while holding a stone to beat his breast in the other hand.
