Description

Maiolica two-handled vase, painted in polychrome with, on the front, an oval panel with a three-quarter length figure of a woman, surrounded by panels, scrolling foliage, roses and buds.

Earthenware, tin-glazed overall, except for a narrow irregular area near the base. Painted in greyish-blue, yellow, and orange. The vase has a globular body with tall cylindrical neck and two twisted handles curling up a little on each side of the lower end.
On the front is an oval panel containing a three-quarter length figure of a woman holding a pot plant, and on the neck, a rectangular panel containing a nereid holding up a drape. Both have yellow grounds, which on the lower panel has orange curls round the edge. The panels are flanked by blue scrolling foliage on a white ground, and narrow panels of different scrolling foliage with a blue ground. The back is decorated with two yellow rosettes and buds amongst blue foliage. Round the lower part, and the top of the neck are yellow and orange horizontal bands and blue spots, which also occur on the shoulder at the back.
