Description

Maiolica pharmacy jar, painted in polychrome, with a half-length figure of a bearded man, a military trophy, and a panel inscribed `SPQP'.

Earthenware, tin-glazed overall, the exterior off-white, the interior greyish-beige. Painted in blue, green, yellow, orange, grey, and manganese-purple. Extremely waisted albarello with a slightly everted rim.
On the front is an oblong frame with pairs of inward curling scrolls at the top and bottom, enclosing a half-length figure of a bearded man wearing a tall hat. The back is decorated with a military trophy and a panel inscribed `SPQP' (Senatus Populusque Panormitanus) in a blue ground incised with a few curved strokes. Above and below are borders of serrated leaves reserved in an orange ground; on the shoulder and the sloping area above the base, yellow and orange interlacing ribbons in a blue ground. The edge of the base and rim are yellow.
