Maiolica hand warmer in the shape of a book, painted in green, yellow and brown.
Covered overall with speckled pale beige tin glaze. Painted in green, yellow, and manganese-brown.
Moulded in the shape of a book with a circular hole near the top of the spine.
The sides are dabbed in all three colours to resemble mottled calf binding. The fore-edge is yellow with manganese-brown lines to represent the pages. The spine is decorated with five groups of horizontal manganese-brown and yellow lines, and is dated `1857' in manganese below the second group from the top.
