Description

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed greyish-white on both sides. Painted in blue. Fragment of a dish or bowl centre, Irregularly-shaped with about half of the slightly concave base and curved centre. Part of a central medallion framed by two concentric circles and spots, enclosing 'IH (S) with a cross above and three nails below. The glaze has crazed on both sides.

Notes

History note: One of a group of sherds, acquired by R.C. Bosanquet accompanied by a label stating: ‘Mostly bought at Orvieto; some pieces, marked P on the back, from Perugia. The Orvieto pieces, with a few exceptions, were found in excavating foundations for houses near Cathedral.’
