Glazed soft-paste porcelain ewe and lamb, with dry edge.

Soft-paste porcelain figure of ewe and lamb, slip-cast, and lead-glazed, with slightly dry-edge. The unglazed underside is extremely thick (2.4 cm), and has a large oval ventilation hole in the middle.The rocky base is roughly rectangular with a curved edge at the back. The recumbent ewe is in profile to left with its head turned to the front. The lamb lies in front of her, facing to the viewer's right, and resting its head on its mother's rear left leg. Both have a long, curly fleece.

History note: Dr and Mrs Hugh Statham (d. respectively 1967 and 1970); Miss Beryl Statham, by whom lent anonymously in 1970; bequeathed by Miss Beryl Statham, 1990, accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum

Note

Variants of this group, probably inspired by Meissen sheep, were made in Chelsea, Bow, and Longton Hall porcelain, in lead-glazed and tin-glazed earthenware, and white salt-glazed stoneware (see C.806-1928). Figures and groups with a 'dry-edge' are usually dated to the early years of the Derby factory, c. 1750-55.
