Alfred the Great Dividing His Loaf with a Pilgrim 1779
Draughtsman: Boydell, Josiah
From the Biffen Fund.
Height: 445 mm
Width: 618 mm
Method of acquisition: Bought (1989) by Ganz, Kate
A preparatory drawing for an engraving by William Sharp after the painting by Benjamin West which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1779 (no. 341) and presented to the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers by John Boydell in 1779 or 1780. The precise nature of the drawing is unclear. Boydell frequently made drawings preparatory to engravings, but it is also possibly that this could have been intended as a display 'sample' copy to interest potential purchasers of Sharp's engraving.
