• Text: The Idea of this very singular and capricious Design seems to be, the representing the Skeleton / of some mighty Prince, or Eastern Satrap, at the moment of its Resurrection (surrounded by the newly / reanimated Carcasses of those Courtiers or Companions with whom he had lain in the Ground, / or who had perhaps been slaughter'd to accompany him there as attendants) previous to which, the / Angel of Death, at whose feet it lies, is pronouncing his Doom from the Volume of / Condemnation; to the exceeding amazement, terror and deep affliction of those flatterers, / who had never yet conceived that supreme Arbitrary power was at the last to meet an Arbiter. / and some of them, probably favourite Ministers, appear to be expostulating with the Angel of Death / upon the Sentence, who sourly receives their remonstrance against his final Jurisdiction. / The expression given to those attendants respecting Sovreignty, agrees with the notion once / entertained by a Refugier Lady, a Mademoiselle D' Osseville, concerning nobility. / For one a Gentleman having said before her, that a particular Man of Fashion, of very / wicked Life, who had Died impenitently, was indupitably in Hell. She answered, / take care of what you say, for let me tell you, Sir, God Almighty will think twice of it, before he Damns a Man of his Quality.
