Single tube barometer of lacquered and gilt wood with chinoiserie decoration.
Scale: Exposed brass scale, probably should be silvered, inscribed 'Stormy, Much Rain, Rain, Changeable, Fair, Very Fair, Grt. Draut. and extending from 28 to 31 inches, each inch divided into quarters. Also inscribed Made by Cha. Orme of Ashby de la Zouch. A recording index slides along a brass wire adjacent to the tube.
Tube: The tube has Orme's usual square pattern boxwood cistern.
Case: Carcase probably of pine and with an oak backboard. Japanned black with gilt chinoiserie decoration of lattice sections alternating with reserves incorporating human figures and a dog. Semi-cylindrical cistern cover decorated with birds and other motifs.

Unlike many of Orme's productions, this example is undated, but is probably an early production, c. 1730-35 in view of the japanned decoration, and the use of the term 'Very Fair' instead of the more usual 'Setd Fair' or 'Set Fair' used on Orme's later work.
