Description

Porcelain, hand-built, and decorated with decal transfers underglaze in blue, supported on a separate hollow rectangular base

Porcelain, hand-built, decorated with blue decal transfers underglaze. Rectangular base of pale brown earthenware (?) coated in streaky white slip, and transfer-printed in blue underglaze. The woman has a small, bald head with small rounded ears, turned three-quarters to its left, broad shoulders, a concave chest, small breasts set wide apart, and a broad waist. Her arms slope outwards towards the elbows which are bent so that the fingers of her large hands rest on the base. The lower part of the front and back of the body, and the arms are printed in blue with sprays of mixed flowers and foliage. The features, and details of the hands are grey. The base is a straight-sided rectangular block, open underneath. It is printed with a spray of flowers and foliage on the side at approximately centre front, and has a half spray on the top viewer's right back corner, which extends down the side at the back.
