Japanning

Scope note

The hard-finish lacquering technique which utilizes many coats of varnish composed of shellac dissolved in spirit, then polished and decorated, usually Oriental in style and subject matter. Originally developed as a substitute for genuine Oriental lacquer which was popular during the second half of the 17th century. OCDA
