Description

Band sampler with both coloured and whitework bands worked in a variety of stitches and including repeating floral and geometric border patterns, four alphabets, numerals, pictorial motifs and an inscription.

Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, long-armed cross, Montenegrin cross, double running, faggot, stem, satin and eye stitch with some speckling and detached needle lace filling stitches. White linen thread is worked in hem, double running, stem and counted satin stitch. There is also cut and drawn work with needle weaving and needle lace filling stitches. There is a plain selvedge at the top and bottom and the sides are hemmed. The sampler is divided into ten coloured bands and eight whitework ones. The former include horizontal repeat floral border patterns at the top; lower down the inscription 'Sarah Leafgreen her sampler' and another border pattern. Below this are four alphabets, numerals 1-21 and a balanced arrangement of eight birds, two dogs and two crowned lions either side of a flowering tree and flower spray. The eight whitework bands of repeat geometric and floral border patterns include two partially worked ones showing how the designs were incorporated into the cut and drawn work.
