Description

Band sampler worked in polychrome silks depicting bands of arcaded flowers, an inscription, large flower vases, a heart, a coronet and a panel surrounded by initials.

Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, eyelet, double running, rococo, satin and stem stitch with some detached filling stitches. Three sides are hemmed with some fragmentary red stitching on the selvedge. The sampler is organised in horizontal bands of stylized arcaded flowers, an inscription and detached motifs. The inscription reads 'Mary Moyse look well to what yov take in hand for larning is better then house or land when land is gone and money is spent then larning is most excellent', 'Avgust the 11 1709 aged 13'. The motifs below include a heart flanked by two large flower vases, a coronet, and below this a panel containing a heart and the initials 'MM', flanked on either side by the initials 'MM' and 'hH' on top of which sit the initials 'RT'.
