Description

Band sampler, worsted, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, eyelet hole and satin stitch. The sampler comprises two sections. The top section is made up of four horizontal bands, which contain alphabets, numerals 1-10, crowns, a flowering plant in pot motif and an inscription. The second section depicts a fruit tree and deer being chased by dogs on a hillocky ground. Above this, birds, butterflies and caterpillars are worked. The inscription in the top section reads 'Take heed to be without mistake or crime/ one day may blemish years of well spent time/Your days to come may ne'er again redreSs/What folly one small moment may express, Martha Harrington April 13 1733'.
