Description

Sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks with polychrome silks in cross and Algerian eye stitch. It has selvedges at the sides and is hemmed at the top. The sampler depicts a house with a lawn on which stand three sheep and a dog, a; a shepherd and shepherdess; the sun and moon; a pair of doves and a pair of cocks; trees; flowers in pots and a verse 'While you my dear your Needle-work attend/ Observe the counsel of a Faithful Friend/ And strive in inward Ornament to gain/ Or all your Needlework will prove in vain'. Signed and dated below with 'Sarah Thurgoods/ work Aged 11/ Years 1826'. All this is framed by a honeysuckle border.
