PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i modern paper flyleaf + ii parchment flyleaves + 555 fols. + ii parchment flyleaves + i modern paper flyleaf, 227 x 162 mm (148 x 100 mm), two columns, 46-47 lines (except fols. 524r-555r, three columns, 49 lines), ruled in plummet and ink, written below top line, running headers, quire and leaf signatures, leaf lost after fol. 523, fol. 555 mutilated (outer column excised)

BINDING: eighteenth century, c.1780, France, purple morocco over pasteboards, sewn on five supports, tooled in gold with rays of IHS monogram with cherubim in centre and doves of Holy Spirit at corners, gilt and gauffered edges

ORNAMENTATION
Blue, red and pink initials [6-46 ll.] highlighted with white geometric patterns, framed in gold, with foliate and dragon motifs and fish, on grounds of contrasting colours or gold, with short border extensions, for beginning of books and prologues (e.g. fols. 167v, 262v, 263r, 438r); alternate red and blue initials [2-10 ll.] with red and blue pen-flourished extensions, some with large feathery motifs, for chapters and psalms (e.g. fols. 148v, 262v); red and blue penwork line fillers, some in the form of fish or geometric patterns (e.g. fols. 50v, 114v, 357r); alternate one-line blue and red capitals for Psalms verses; alternate one-line blue and red Roman numerals for chapters, with pen flourishing in the same colours; textual corrections, including omitted words, often placed in the mouths of red and blue penwork fish and dragons (e.g. fols. 134v, 168r, 342v); running headers in alternate red and blue characters, some embellished with fish motifs (e.g. fol. 1r); red and blue paraph marks; capitals highlighted in red.
