Description

Gold, ornamented with granulation, filigree and applied wirework, set with pink and green gemstones, and pearls. The pendant has a cameo bust of Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872) in profile to the right, signed DE-FELICI. Behind the cameo there is a compartment containing plaited hair, surrounded by the inscription 'P.A. Taylor. 27TH SEPR 1842 Clementia Taylor 1882', all under glass. In original maroon velvet case (A), the silk lined interior of the lid printed in silver 'S. ACCARISI E NIPOTE/FIRENZE' .

History note: By descent in the female line of the family of P. A. Taylor, who had no issue. Malcolm Carr Antiques Ltd., 94 Gloucester Terrace, London, W2.

Note

P.A. Taylor met Mazzini in 1845 and in 1847 became Chairman of the Society of Friends of Italy, founded in that year. He married in 1842, Clementia, daughter of John Doughty of Brockdish, Norfolk.

The name of the firm inside the lid may be both manufacturer and vendor, but this needs to be confirmed.
