Description

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello; rectangular base with two bombé and two flat sides and a domed lid; carved and nielloed with figures on a gilt ground

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello; chased and gilt cagework boders contain the rectangular base, the bombé front and back panels, the flat sides and the domed lid with flat arched ends. The lid is hinged and has a scrolled thumbpiece at the centre of the front. The lid, sides and base are carved and nielloed with figures and scenery on a recessed matted gilt ground. Depicted on the lid is a woman in a charriot drawn by two horses, with her three attendants, a lion and dog, in front of buildings in a city. Depicted on the front panel is a woman playing the lute while two cherubs dance; on the right side a seated couple are taking snuff; and on the back panel and left side are a woman playing the lute next to a man playing the flute. The base is recessed and undecorated. The interior is gilt.
