Description

Cylindrical boiled leather pyx with domed lid; decorated with stamped, engraved and painted panels and borders

Boiled, stamped, engraved and painted leather (cuir bouilli) covering carved wood, lined with parchment. Cylindrical with straight sides, everted at the base and rim. The domed pull-off lid has a wrythen knop. Each side has two suspension loops, through which a cord would have been threaded. Decorated with panels of scrolling foliage on a matted ground within reeded borders. The pyx would once have painted all over, but only small areas of red and gold remain. The cream parchment lining covers red paint, and is a later addition.
