Maebyong: C.6-1920

Object information

Current Location: Gallery 29 - Korean Gallery

Pottery: Unknown (Probably)

Vase with floral designs. Stoneware, thrown, painted in iron-oxide and celadon-glazed. This maebyong-shaped vase has a short neck with everted rim. The body has a wide, rounded shoulder and narrows gradually towards the foot. The low footring is cut with a knife. Brown iron-oxide was used for painting stylised chrysanthemum-like petals around the shoulder and foot, and three sketchy floral sprays around the body. The glaze is of greenish-brown colour, somewhat unevenly applied, and has a fine overall crackle. The glaze has been wiped from the footring before firing and there are traces of fire-clay spur-marks.

Maebyong were probably used for plum blossoms or ginseng wine. Some examples still retain their lid. This piece appears to date from before the twelfth century, when the form was particularly popular. It is probably the product of the kilns at Chinsan-ri, Haenam-gun, South Cholla province. The brownish tinge of the glaze is a feature often seen on iron-decorated celadons.
