Description

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello, circular; decorated with a map, shields and inscription.

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello, circular with flat pull-off lid. The lid is nielloed with a map of Vologda guberniia (province) a list of neighbouring gubernii (top left) a key to the symbols on the map (top right) a table of distances between twelve towns (bottom right) and the scale (bottom left), all on a gilt ground. The sides of the box are engraved and nielloed with shields containing the symbols and names of twelve towns in the gaberniia, on a gilt ground. The sides of the lid are inscribed in Cyrillic "The town of Vologda is located 59˚ 13½ minutes north in latitude and 57 degrees 50 minutes (east) in longitude". The base is inscribed with a descriptio of the Vologda gubernia, including the population by social category, the numbers of monesteries and churches, and the areas and various categories of land. The interior of the box is gilt.
