Gold, cast, engraved in the shape of two birds each with one wing outstretched, flanking an oval cabochon banded agate surrounded by pearls, the reverse with a glazed compartment containing a piece of blue ribbon. Pin fastening. In original dark maroon leather case (A), blind-stamped 'WB' for William Betteridge, the lid of which is lined with pale blue silk printed in gold 'Watherston & Son / 12 Pall Mall East, / London'

Note

Watherston & Son ran a successful business as manufacturing goldsmiths, jewellers and gold chain makers, later branching out to deal in diamonds and pearls and retail silver. They exhibited in the Paris Exhibition of 1867.
