Leaf from an Antiphonal
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 427 x 308 (335 x 209) mm, 10 lines of text ruled in faint brown ink and 10 four-line musical staves ruled in red ink.
CONTENTS: Antiphon for the Dedication of a Church, Sanctificavit dominus tabernaculum.
DECORATION: Historiated initial [S, 2 ll.] formed of entwined foliage on gold ground, table set for a meal, with interlaced acanthus and floral border including Christ as Salvator Mundi and putto with pipe and tabor.
ORNAMENTATION: Alternate red and blue one-line penwork initials; calligraphic black ink one-line initial with grotesque profile.
History note: Made for a house of the Order of the Holy Cross, probably St Cornelius at Roermond, Limburg; purchased from Bernard Quaritch by the Friends of the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1911.
