PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 19 fols. + i paper flyleaf, 130 x 93 (framed miniatures 100 x 73, text 80 x 55) mm, 14 long lines, ruled in brown ink

BINDING: 17th century, gold-tooled limp vellum, traces of fastening at centre of top on both covers.

CONTENTS: fol. 1r Title page; fols. 2r – 19v Miniatures on rectos and Prayers in German on versos, now erased.

DECORATION: Eighteen full-page framed miniatures, those on fols. 9r, 10r and 18r with internal foliate arches simulating wood carving: fol. 2r Priest (dressed as deacon) administering host to kneeling patron, three Angels attending, triptych with St Veronica in central panel and corporal box on altar; fol. 3r Adoration of the Magi; fol. 4r Martyrdom of St Sebastian; fol. 5r St Michael weighing soul; fol. 6r St Elizabeth of Hungary giving alms; fol. 7r St Helena finding the Cross; fol. 8r St John the Baptist pointing at open book, lamb at his feet; fol. 9r probably St Sebald of Nuremberg dressed as pilgrim and holding church whose West end resembles that of St Sebald in Nuremberg (17th century inscription S. Raimondo); fol. 10r St Roch as pilgrim, dog at his feet bringing him bread; fol. 11r St Christopher carrying Christ Child, with hermit holding lantern; fol. 12r St Francis receiving stigmata, brother Leo sleeping; fol. 13r All Saints, including St Nicholas, St George, and St Helena; fol. 14r St Martin dividing cloak with beggar; fol. 15r Martyrdom of St Catherine, miracle of wheel consumed by fire in background; fol. 16r Martyrdom of St Barbara, two angels holding chalice with host above; fol. 17r Martyrdom of St Stephen, vision of Christ above; fol. 18r St John the Evangelist holding cup with serpent; fol. 19r St John, the Virgin and an angel supporting the dead Christ.

ORNAMENTATION: Three foliate border fragments, one including the Virgin and the Unicorn, pasted on paper to form full-border for 17th century title page (fol. 1r.

Notes

History note: Unidentified male patron depicted on fol. 2r; unidentified 17th century Italian owner who cut up original manuscript and created title page (fol. 1r); erased name R[…]on verso of paper flyleaf; label ‘No 361 / X210’ inside upper cover; Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
