Miniature with saints


Artist: Master of the Lübeck Bible and associates




PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 232 x 122 mm, reverse side blank.

DECORATION: Full-page miniature of saints with the Spanish forms of their names inscribed in the upper and lower margins: Four female penitent saints within landscapes framed by branches that extend from the strewn-flower border: St Mary Magdalene inscribed S. MARIA MADALENA with ointment jar, St Mary of Egypt inscribed S. MARIA EGICIACA with three loaves, St Theodora of Alexandria inscribed S. THEODORA, St Thais of Egypt inscribed S. TAIS with fire in which she burnt her jewels behind her.


History note: Probably part of the collections of Abatte Luigi Celotti (c.1768 – c.1846) and/or Samuel Rogers (1763 – 1855); cuttings from unidentified English sale catalogue with lot numbers 39 – 42 pasted on old mounts; Thomas Miller Whitehead (his initials and comments on old mounts); Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
