Description

Reverse crystal intaglio of a bird on a branch mounted in gold, enamelled in pale blue and red and set with pearls. Oval with a loop for suspension at the top, decorated en suite with the mount. Behind the intaglio there is a compartment for a phototgraph or hair. The back of the mount is engraved with the word 'Vienna' and the date '1873'. In black leather case (A)

Production date: AD 1873 : Dated 1873, but probably a few years earlier.

Note

At the 1873 Vienna exhibition only one British jeweller exhibited crystal intaglios, W.J. Thomas, so this piece was retailed by him, but this does not indicate the carver. The crystal by Emil Marius Pradier.
