PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii modern paper flyleaves + 295 fols. + ii modern paper flyleaves, 170 x 116 (100 x 72) mm, 20 long lines, ruled in purple ink.

BINDING: nineteenth century, wooden boards with two horizontal blind-stamped leather bands with decorative nails, four metal rose-bosses on corners of upper and lower cover and cut out medallions in the centre inlaid on upper cover with silver angel holding cross, two leather straps cut off lower cover, edges stained red.

ORNAMENTATION: Blue or pink white-patterned initials [3 – 8 ll.] with acanthus and floral infill on gold grounds, and full or partial acanthus and floral spraywork borders at main text divisions; borders on fols. 224r and 243r include birds and animals with inscribed scrolls; gold initials [2 – 3 ll.] on blue and dark pink white-patterned grounds with floral and gold-leaf spraywork extensions; alternate gold and blue one-line initials with blue or red pen-flourished infill and extensions; capitals highlighted in red.

History note: Lot 578 in an unidentified Sotheby’s sale as recorded by James 1912, 202 (no extant inscription or cutting from sale catalogue); Frank McClean (1837 – 1904); his bequest 1904.
