PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i paper flyleaf + ii modern parchment flyleaves + 28 fols. + ii modern parchment flyleaves + iii paper flyleaves, 212 x 140 mm (140 x 90 mm), 24 long lines, ruled in light brown ink.

BINDING: sixteenth century, gold-tooled and gold-stamped limp vellum, sewn on three supports, central medallion with gold-stamped coat of arms (over-painted).

DECORATION: Historiated initial formed of stylized acanthus and cameos on gold ground with full border of flowers, jewels and cameos on black ground: fol. 1r Penitential Psalms, [D, 9 ll.] David in prayer.

ORNAMENTATION: Alternate gold and blue initials [3 ll.] with blue or red pen-flourished infill, frames and extensions; alternate gold and blue one-line initials with blue or red pen flourishing; capitals highlighted in yellow, with occasional calligraphic ornament.

Notes

History note: Ferdinandus (name found in three prayers, fols. 10r, 14r and 18v); coat of arms gold-stamped on both covers and over-painted chequy, gules and sable, or and sable (Benedetto), or argent and sable (Grimani); ‘Gracia F. ab. Brescia 1776’ (ownership inscription on verso of last paper flyleaf at end); pressmark N.10 written on verso of first paper flyleaf at front; purchased by F.J. Norton at Sotheby’s before 1939 and presented by him to the Museum in 1979.
