Miniature from an Antiphoner
Artist: Master of the Osservanza Triptych
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, framed miniature 247 x 270 mm, cardboard on which the miniature was formerly pasted partially removed to reveal three fragmentary lines of text and three four-line musical staves ruled in red ink.
CONTENTS: Fragmentary text on reverse, from the versicle for the ninth lesson of the third nocturn of Matins for the feast of St Augustine (28 August), [Testamentum nullum fecit] quia unde facere[t] pauper Christi non habuit; the miniature probably introduced the subsequent first antiphon for Lauds, Post mortem matris reversus est Augustinus ad agros proprios.
DECORATION: Framed miniature with scenes from the life of St Augustine’s mother, St Monica, in two compartments on burnished gold background: The Burial of St Monica at Ostia (left) and St Augustine Departing for Africa (right).
History note: Probably from the Augustinian convent of Santa Marta in Siena
