Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 216 x 153mm

CONTENT: Commission from Doge Pietro Lando (r. 1539-1545) appointing Antonio (?) Bollani Podestà of the terrae humagi (Umag, Croatia) for one year.

DECORATION: Miniature of St Anthony Abbot with crutch and bell praying to a vision of Virgin and Child against a mountainous landscape, below it a cartouche with a female figure (Peace?) in liquid gold on a red ground, surrounded by a full historiated border with urns and floral motifs in gold on a ground of solid colour and gold-framed compartments, with the Lion of St Mark in upper margin, St Peter in the outer margin, and a shield of arms hung by a ribbon against a mountainous backdrop in the lower margin and flanked by inscription: ANNO AETATIS LIIII (the numbers are very faded and their reading is uncertain).

ORNAMENTATION: Traces of an initial [2 ll.] in gold on square red ground on the verso.
