Leaf from a Doge’s Commission

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 212 x 144 mm, pasted on cardboard mount.
DECORATION: Full-page oval miniature with holder of commission in white habit and scapular (probably a Carmelite) kneeling in prayer before an altar with a Crucifix and two books bound in red, and a lion at one side, the whole set in an austere interior with landscape beyond, framed by a full border of gold formal ornament with the arms, per pale, argent and gules, crest of unicorn holding a heart, and motto PRINCIPIUM INSPICE RARUM in the lower bar.
