Leaf from a Doge’s Commission

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 230 x 158 mm
CONTENTS: Leaf from a commission from Doge Andrea Gritti (r. 1523-1539) appointing Pietro Dechataipetra (de Tagliapietra) as podestà of Vicenza (1535)
DECORATION: Arch-topped miniature of St Mark the Evangelist with his lion, watched by St Peter against a background of mountains and sky, the text of the commission presented on a trompe-l’oeuil flattened scroll below, and the whole surrounded by a border of scrolling flowers and foliage on a dark ground with oval medallion containing half-length portrait of St Sebastian in the right margin and Tagliapietra arms in a cartouche suspended by a ribbon in front of a mountainous landscape in the lower margin.
ORNAMENTATION: Epigraphic capitals in gold for the beginning of the text.
History note: Guglielmo Libri (1803-1869), ‘Libri no. 563’ pencilled on verso, not identified in Libri sales
