De primo bello punico

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i marbled endleaf + viii eighteenth-century paper flyleaves + 60 fols. + vii eighteenth-century paper flyleaves + i marbled endleaf, 247 x 165 mm (150 x 100 mm), 27 long lines, ruled in hard point and brown ink, catchwords
BINDING: Eighteenth century, red leather over pasteboards with ‘Harleian’ gold tooling, gilt edges.
CONTENTS: fols. 1r-60r Leonardo Aretino Bruni, De primo bello punico
ORNAMENTATION: Four ornamental initials [6-8 ll.] in punched gold on grounds of green, blue and pink with elaborate white vine-scroll shaded with purple and grey, for book divisions (fols. 1r, 2r, 24r, 42r), accompanied on fol. 1r by a one-sided border of white vine-scroll on gold, blue, pink and green with green and silver finials; two similar initials [3 ll.] for lesser divisions (fols. 12v, 23r); rubrics copied in purple or pale red epigraphic capitals.
History note: Ralph Palmer (1712-1755) of Little Chelsea (fol. ii recto, Bibliotheca Palmeriana, 1747); Rev. Henry Drury (1778-1841), of Harrow; sold by Evans (London), 19 February, 1827, lot 394 (extract from sale catalogue inside upper cover, with comment that the manuscript is ‘from the Archer Collection’, and a price of three guineas; Schoenberg Database no. 35306); purchased by the Museum in 1892.
