Historiated initial from a Choir Book
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 70 x 80 mm, fragmentary four-line musical stave ruled in red ink and fragmentary words on reverse.
DECORATION: Historiated initial in dark pink with white abstract ornament and acanthus extensions on gold ground: [S] Two half-length figures of saints, one bearded and holding a book and palm branch, the other youthful and holding a book and a lily-spray.
History note: Thomas Miller Whitehead, acquired in June 1855 (ownesrship inscription on reverse); Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831-1912); his bequest, 1912.
