Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, iii modern paper flyleaves + 35 fols. + iii modern paper flyleaves.

BINDING: Early Modern, blind-stamped alum tawed skin over wooden boards, sewnon four supports, remains of two leather straps on upper cover, two catchplates on lower cover, traces of a central boss and four corner bosses on each cover, re-sewn and repaired at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1994.

CONTENTS: fol. 1r Opening prayer to the Trinity, the Virgin, Saints Joseph and Crescentius; fols. 1r-23r Statutes and Ordinances of the Compagnia di Maria Giuseppe; fols. 24r-28r Punishments for misconduct; fol. 28v Autograph confirmation of the Statutes and Ordinances by Felix Tiranni, from Cagli, Archbishop of Urbino, dated 7 Jan. 1565, with his seal and the signature of his secretary Sansonetto di Sansonetti; fols. 29r-34v Order of admission of novices to the Compagnia di Maria Giuseppe; fol. 35r-v Hymn Joseph stirpis davitice with two musical staves on fol. 35r.

DECORATION: Three framed half-page miniatures flanked by strips of floral and spraywork ornament, and accompanied by full foliate and spraywork borders with gold balls, for sections in the Punishments for misconduct: fol. 25r Pentecost; fol. 27r Member of the confraternity ordering a guilty member down on his knees in front of other members in the confraternity’s chapel; fol. 28r Penitent member kneeling to receive communion in front of other members in the confraternity’s chapel.

Historiated initial in pink on blue ground with full floral and spraywork border with gold balls and a wreath enclosing an over-painted coat of arms, azure, three bends or: fol. 1r Opening prayer, [A, 4 ll.] Holy Trinity.

ORNAMENTATION: Gold initials [2-3 ll.] on blue and pink grounds with white ornament and full foliate and spraywork borders with gold balls, for each section in the Punishments for misconduct (fols. 24r, 25r, 27r, 28r, 29r); red or brown ink initials [2-3 ll.], some with geometric ornament; capitals in red or in brown ink highlighted in red.
