Historiated initial from a Choir Psalter and Hymnal

Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 136 x 146 mm, four fragmentary lines of text written on alternate lines, ruled in brown ink.

CONTENTS: On reverse, fragmentary text from Ps. 143, 3-4, aut filius [hominis quoniam re]putas eum [homo v]anitati simi[lis factus est] dies eius sicut; the initial B marked the start of Ps. 143, Benedictus.

ORNAMENTATION: Ornamental initial formed by an inner band of liquid gold and outer sections of solid colour combined with dense foliage with the same motifs used in the bowl of the letter: [B] painted on square grounds of solid blue with intricate white highlighting and scalloped edging in brown ink.
