Collage with historiated initial and border from a Choir Psalter
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 356 x 376 mm, collage made up of initial (248 x 270 mm) and two border fragments, formerly pasted on cardboard, which has been partially removed to reveal six lines of fragmentary text
CONTENTS: The initial D would have introduced Psalm 114, Dilexi quoniam exaudiet dominus, the first psalm for Monday Vespers; on reverse partially legible fragment of the Magnificat, Luke 1:48-51, quia respexit humilitatem [ancillae suae]. Ecce enim ex hoc beatam [me dicent] omnes generationes. Quia [fecit mihi mag]na qui potens est et sanctum [nomen eius]. Et misericordia eius a (sic) progenies [et progenies] timentibus eum. Fecit.
DECORATION: Historiated initial formed of stylized acanthus and pearls, surrounded by foliage, grotesques and putti on gold ground, and enclosed within composite floral and acanthus borders containing birds, animals, grotesques, and the devices of Ferdinand and Isabella, the yoke and the bundle of arrows respectively: Ps. 114, [D, 6 ll.] Personification of Hope as a crowned maiden, standing on pillar, holding scroll inscribed Sperate in eo omnis congregatio populi (Ps. 61:9), and accompanied by seven crowned maidens holding scrolls inscribed with garbled verses from Ps. 115, 119 and 120, partial inscription alongside frame, NIO N VIDEMUS SPE.
History note: Royal monastery of St Thomas in Avila, Spain; Rev. E.S. Dewick (1844–1917); purchased from his son, Rev. E.C. Dewick, and presented by the Friends of the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1918.
