Officer's dress sword


Swordmaker: Jones




Cast and chiselled gilt-brass hilt (Norman 112) with asymetrical, almost triangular shell-guard. Vase-shaped pommel. The whole decorated with beading. Plain, straight, flat blade, decorated towards the hilt with etched foliage and the maker's name and address. Scabbard of wood, covered in black leather, with brass chape and locket, the latter gilt.


History note: Probably Major-General Sir Francis Seymour who was Groom in Waiting to Prince Albert and to Queen Victoria, and from whom the donor is descended. From the collection of the donor's brother, the late L.H. Smyth, M.A., LL.B. (Trinity Hall).
