Object information

Current Location: In storage

Ruler: Louis the Pious (814-840)
Mint: Unspecified

Cut-quarter of a gold solidus. Only some 15 official solidi of Louis are known, compared with some 80 imitations. The importance of this carefully divided quarter-coin is as evidence for the acceptance of solidi by tale rather than as mere bullion in the 9th century.

History note: Ex Spink sale 14 July 1998, lot 270 (not sold); found near Louth, Lincs, November 1996.
