Description

Soft-paste porcelain teapot with hexagonal stand, painted in polychrome enamels with scattered florals sprays and sprigs, and gilt

Soft-paste porcelain (presumed steatitic), painted overglaze in green, yellow pink, puce, purple and red enamels, and gilded. The globular pot stands on a footring, and has a short cylindrical neck, a curved upward-tilting spout, and an applied D-shaped handle. Behind the spout there are five holes to emit the tea. The slightly domed cover has a ventilation hole and a knob in the shape of a convolvulus flower on a stem with two leaves. The underside of the rim and exterior of the flange which fits inside the neck of the pot are unglazed. The hexagonal stand has a flat base, and shallow sloping sides. The edge is shaped with six large scallops separated by pairs of smaller scallops. Both sides of the pot are decorated with one large floral arrangement and several scattered floral sprays and leaf sprigs. The handle and both sides of the spout have a red four-petalled flower with a short row of pots on either side of it. The cover is decorated with three floral sprays and two leaf sprigs. The convolvulus knob is pink with a yellow centre. A gold band runs round the end of the spout and the outer edge of the cover. The stand has one large floral spray, four small sprays and two leaves. The edge is outlined in dark red-brown.
