Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 145 x 100 mm (95 x 55 mm), pasted on paper obscuring most of the text on the reverse

CONTENTS: Prayer preceding the Mass (continued on the verso)

DECORATION: Full-page miniature with a gold frame: The Mass of St Gregory with Christ supported by two angels, four other angels in blue and gold chiaroscuro holding the instruments of the Passion, and the patron, Charles de Martigny, kneeling in front of the altar for the prayer preceding the Mass, with the words [S]UMME. SACERDOS. ET. VERE. PONTIFEX. QUI. TE. OBTULISTI DEO PATRI, inscribed in maroon capitals on the lower edge of the frame (recto).

ORNAMENTATION: One-sided, vertical border in the outer margin of pink and blue acanthus and floral sprays on gold ground, incorporating floral motifs and a bird (verso).

History note: Charles de Martigny (d. 1512); Samuel Rogers (1763-1855); his sale, Christie’s, London, 28 April 1856, possibly lot 998; Thomas Miller Whitehead (1825-1897), notes in his hand and the year 1856 inscribed on the reverse; not included in his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 3 May 1898; Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831-1912); his bequest, 1912.
