Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Valentine converted to a New Year card. Lace-paper with an ornate gilded lace-paper flap at the centre. At the centre of the flap is an oval-shaped, chromolithographed scrap of violets and snowdrops and the German greeting: "Alles Gute zum neuen jahre" ("Happy New Year") printed around the lower edge. Underneath the flap is a printed verse within a gilded, lace-paper roundel: "Though wide apart / our paths may be / Still time shall never / alter me / nor distance change beget / through all the unknown / future's ways / the friendship of our / early days / I never shall / forget." The inside of the card is blank. Scraps for use in valentine and greetings card-making were imported from Germany throughout the 19th century.
