Description

32mo-size lace-paper with inner lithographed and embossed, cross-cornered frame. MULLORD embossed at lower centre. Affixed at the centre is a chromolithographed scrap of a bellboy / hotel porter carrying a parcel, hat box and bouquet of flowers, all of which have flaps that open to reveal a metal instrument, a "Trinkhalle" with bar-maid and a bottle, respectively. The lace-paper front is adhered to the back paper. A printed scroll with 'mock' advertisement affixed below the figure: "Wanted a Mate / The Applicant / can give positive / proof that strict / honor [sic] is his plan.". The German words printed onto the scrap of the bellboy/porter indicate that it is clearly a German import, as many chromolithographed scraps were during the first half of the nineteenth century. This card is mounted on the album leaf facing a series of eight playing-card-style valentines which employ similar imported figure scraps, one of which, P.14412-R-78, features the same bellboy / hotel porter scrap.
