Valentine card
Publisher: Mansell, Joseph
Large 4to-size white lace-paper with central panel decorated with hand-coloured cut-paper pink roses and forget-me-nots with additional, hand-painted leaves and tendrils. A hand-drawn mirror at the centre with hand-painted 'glass' surface which, if held to the light, contains a large, hand-drawn bird. The bird is drawn on a circular piece of paper which is affixed to the verso of the paper. A comic verse in black ink has been written below the mirror by the sender: 'While blushes deep bespread my cheek / And modesty doth almost stay my hand / oh let any pen my true thoughts speak / And listen with thy look so bland / I love thee with a passion nothing can assuage / Naught can alter but to be possessd / of thee dear stuffed with onion / and with sage / Then with what rapture would I rush / unto thy breast / X'. MANSELL stamped at lower centre. Hand-written 'L' in graphite at the top right of the right-hand inside page. 'Mansell' written in graphite onto the album leaf below.
