Description

A circular medallion at the centre bears the Greek name of the publisher (in modern Greek, 'Paignioxartopoeion e Elpis') and the location 'EN KEPKYPA', which is the Greek name for the island of Corfu. The city seal of Corfu which features an ancient Greek sailing boat, is depicted at the centre of the medallion. 'Elpis' (meaning 'Hope') was the name of the playing card factory founded on Corfu in 1873 by Gerasimos Aspiotis. The cards were designed by Gerasimos's father, Corfiot artist Nikolaos Aspiotis (1815-1891). From a complete set of 52 Greek playing cards of the Venetian type. Lithography in black ink, coloured with three stones of blue, red and yellow. The backs of the cards feature a lithographed design in blue ink of a repeated crown pattern.
